  Biography: Afroja Parvin, Executive Director, NUS

Afroja Parvin is a human rights activist working in development field since last 20 years. She is the Founder Member and the Executive Director of Nari Unnayan Shakti, NUS (Women's Power for Development), which is a non-governmental, non-political and secular organization established in Bangladesh in 1992. NUS supports around 150,000 people through 115 service outlets/centers in 13 districts and especially working for women and children's rights and their development. She has done her M.Sc. under Dhaka University and studied Gender Policy and Planning in University College London, UK. She also has got her education on “Women in Management” from USA. At present she is the international training coach    
 of an one year course at CEDPA, Washington DC.  She has elected as Secretary General of International Network on Women in Management.

She is the international facilitator of Commonwealth Asia Center (CYP) and facilitating trainings in different Commonwealth Countries organized by CYP as Youth Ambassador.  She has conducted several sessions for TOT at BNCU (Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO). She has chaired different international conferences and also presented technical papers in Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, United Kingdom, Uganda, United States of America, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and so many countries. Myanmar, Bhutan, More than 100 NGOs and institutions (national and international) received training from NUS or from her on deferent development issues including leadership courses and Afroja Parvin has conducted those trainings. In 2006 she has facilitated several workshops with 194 journalists, 383 police officials, 156 advocates as NUS's regular program. 

She has introduced Mock Trial Sessions in Bangladesh to empower the victims of child sexual abuse and domestic violence and their prosecutors for quality and prompt legal assistance through NUS and provided Mock Trials for 37 persons till to date. At present NUS is supporting 283 victims violence and running 2 shelter homes for the raped, sexually abused, trafficked victims as well as for the children of the commercial sex workers and those have no father's identities. She has to face torture as the result of supporting the victims of violence.  Two persons have been arrested by the police as the torturer of her before Eidul Fitre of 2006. She contributes in formulating different national policies in the fields of poverty reduction, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, gender mainstream, women empowerment, youth development. In November and December 2006, Afroja Parvin has conducted trainings for CARE Bangladesh Staffs and their Partner NGOs at NUS's Mock Trial Venue where about 56 participants were there.

She anchors two regular television programs on development issues. One is "Shotorupa" at Bangladesh Television (being broadcasted 2 programs for 25 minutes and 4 times in a month and projecting women leaders and their achievements in Bangladesh), other one is "Koishor Shonglap" at Channel I (being broadcasted two programs for 25 minutes and in a month.). Beside those she has anchored "National program of World AIDS Day 2006 Most of the TV Channels like nTv, Channel 1, Channel i, RTv, ATN Bangla, STv, BTv etc. has broadcasted her interviews or lectures. Different press media published her achievements and programs more than thousand times at their popular news papers in Bangladesh and abroad.

As the ED of NUS she is grateful to UNICEF, SARIQ, AED, USAID, CIDA, UNDP, UNOPS, WORLD BANK, UNFPA, COMMONWEALTH, MJ, CARE, DFID, DANIDA, ILO, ATSEC, The Daywalka Foundation, Save the Children UK, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Social Welfare, Ministry of Labor and Employment, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, BRAC, DORP, GK, CCDB, CEDPA, Global Fund to fight against AIDS, TB and Malaria etc. those have supported NUS since its inception.
