NUS’s Track Record of AIDS Prevention and General Health Program

NUS has been working for14 years on HIV/AIDS in Bangladesh and has been expanding its program all over the country. The United Nations in their research document on AIDS Prevention in Bangladesh published in 2003 have evaluated NUS’s as the organization of best practice. The National Commission for UNESCO hires NUS’s skilled trainers regularly for conducting Training of Trainers. Commonwealth participates at international conferences on HIV/AIDS, presents papers, and chairs sessions. Moreover, NUS has produced Asia Center, India invites NUS every year for facilitating in country and international training. NUS several BCC materials and training modules, and published books and leaflets on HIV/AIDS. At present under NUS’s HIV/AIDS program over 82 staff, 217 volunteers/peer educators, 26 youth ambassadors, work in 44 villages under 12 thana’s of 7 districts in Bangladesh. NUS’s services under this project are STI treatment, condom demonstration and distribution, awareness raising as well as community and policy level advocacy. NUS supports the HIV positive women and children.

Under the general health care support NUS runs 7 centers for clinical diagnosis and care of general patients, gynae, childcare and STD, and at Dhaka NUS started pathological tests (Stool, Urine, Blood and Cough).

Track Record of NUS in AIDS Prevention
On going Projects:
  • HIV/AIDS Prevention Project (HAPP) for the Street Based Sex Workers (CSWs) with effect from August 2004 till to date at Chittagong and Barisal Division supported by MOHFW, UNICEF, DORP.
  • HIV/AIDS Prevention Project (HAPP) for the Internal Migrants with effect from August 2004 to date at Chittaging Division. It is supported by MHFW, UNICEF and BRAC.
  • NUS have been conducting STD/AIDS prevention program for the University and college students from 1993 with the support of FCHD. NUS developed a total of 177 Peer Educators and 26 Youth Ambassadors under Commonwealth Youth Program. To date 12000 students are aware.
  • Conducting several STD/AIDS prevention program for Street Based CSWs on HIV/AIDS prevention, STD treatment and general health care in five thanas of Dhaka City It is supported by UNDP. It is an integrated program under CSWs social rehabilitation project at Badda since 2000.
  • NUS maintains "Slum Based Multi-Purpose Service Center for Women and Children" with NUS core fund. DFID supported the program from 1995-97.
  • NUS organizes stage cultural shows (drama and songs presentation on AIDS prevention) and public gathering with the support of FCHD and till date has organized 924 shows.
Completed Projects
  • Leadership Development Training for the young people with the assistance of World Bank from July- Dec, 2004
  • STD/AIDS prevention program for the Rickshaw- pullers and their families from 1999 till 2002 with the support of UNOPS/NASP at Khilgaon thana, Dhaka. The program was evaluated by UNAIDS and its report adjudged as one of the best practice programs in Bangladesh.
  • NUS conducted a rapid assessment on Knowledge, Attitude and Needs (KAN) on AIDS among the Rickshaw pullers with the support of UNOPS/UNDP/NASP at Khilgaon thana of Dhaka City.
  • A qualitative research was conducted to find out the vulnerability of the urban people to HIV/AIDS and their needs with the assistance of HASAB at Khilgaon thana of Dhaka City in 1996.
  • STD/AIDS prevention intervention for rickshaw pullers and their families from 1997 till 1999 with the support of HASAB at ward no. 26 of Khilgaon thana of Dhaka City.
  • Conducted several activities for CSWs on HIV/AIDS prevention, STD treatment and primary health care in Kandupotty brothel at English Road in the old town of Dhaka City since 1995-1997 with the assistance of CIDA.
  • NUS conducted STD/AIDS prevention program for rickshaw pullers and their families in 1999 at ward 25 Khilgaon thana of Dhaka city piloting HIV/AIDS program with the support of BAPCP.
  • NUS conducted Poster Art Competition on HIV/AIDS for students of Fine Arts Department of Dhaka University.
  • NUS produced audiocassettes, book, T- shirts, posters, stickers, key rings, peer educator training module, brochure as BCC materials of HIV/AIDS prevention.
  • NUS conducted out-door health care service with the financial support from CIDA until the end of 1999. A health clinic was run at Khilgaon Chowrasta with the support of UNOPS from 1999-2002.
